"Fluffy"
It
was a balmy, crisp, August afternoon. Mrs. Casp was mailing her dishes as
the trucks went by. "Are you entering the rug race this year, Juan?"
she asked one of the drivers. Juan was short and slender with no ears, but
the man whom Mrs. Casp addressed was tall and stout and eating ice cream."I'm afraid you've got the wrong man, lady," he said to Mrs. Casp, not bothering to be polite.
"I've got that 500 dollars I borrowed from you, Juan. What did you say?" said Mrs. Casp.
"Si, Seņora, I was just saying what a nice day it was," replied the sly driver, faking a Juarez accent.
"Do you have time to come in and help me give Fluffy her bath?" asked Mrs. Casp.
"No, Seņora, I'm in a hurry. Long haul today," replied the truck driver.
"Alright," said Mrs. Casp. "I'll go get your 500 dollars. I'll be right back."
"Si, Seņora," beamed the truck driver, wringing his wretched hands. In several minutes, Mrs. Casp returned, toting a fat roll of bills in her right hand, and a grey kitten in her left. "Here's your money, Juan."
"Muchos gracias, Seņora. Well, I'd better get rolling. Adios!"
"Aren't you forgetting something, Juan?" asked Mrs. Casp. "Aren't you going to pet Fluffy like you always do?"
"Oh. Si, Seņora, I forget. My mind must be on other things," said the crooked truck driver, and he began to pet Fluffy, the grey kitten.
"Isn't she sweet?" gushed Mrs. Casp, and "She's smiling at you, Juan", or "She's saying 'I like when Juan pets me'," and each time the truck driver would say, "Si, Seņora," and he was getting very edgy. Then Mrs. Casp said, "Give Juan a kiss, Fluffy, and say goodbye," and she held Fluffy close to the driver's face. "Give Fluffy a kiss, Juan."
"Si, Seņora," replied the truck driver, carefully leaning toward the tiny, grey kitten. Just as he was about to kiss it, Mrs. Casp jerked Fluffy away from him and bit off the cute kitten's head. The truck driver admitted he wasn't Juan, and Mrs. Casp decided not to press charges if he married her. So he did.
